KARACHI: Pakistan’s former captain and a prolific all-rounder Shahid Afridi has been under the scanner for his mediocre batting form throughout last year, and has been advised by several former players and teammates to take a break from the game.

Former captain Rashid Latif, however, has suggested that the star revisit his decision to retire from domestic competition to get back into rhythm.

“I have not seen a problem with Afridi’s fitness in the past year. His batting strike rate was also impressive but the fact of the matter is that he spent very little time at the wicket for his runs. Every batsman needs to give himself time to regain the lost touch and this is where Afridi lacked in the recent past,” Latif said.

“Afridi scored 182 runs in 13 ODI innings he played in 2012, but faced only 179 deliveries,” the former gloveman pointed out.

Latif further said that unlike others who faced a similar lean patch, Afridi was not playing the longer-versions of the domestic events and therefore not working out his problems.

“Younis, Misbah, Hafeez and others have been through bad patches, however, they overcame the hindrance by scoring heavily in the domestic events by spending time in the middle. Afridi should do the same, I feel.”

Shahid Afridi, who has played 27 Test matches for Pakistan, took retirement from the longest version in July 2010. In Test matches, the all-rounder has scored 1716 runs at an average of 36.51, and notched up five centuries.

Pakistan thrash Oman in Asian Champions Trophy opener3

KARACHI: Pakistan started their Asian Hockey Champions Trophy campaign in style, trouncing Oman 8-3 in the opening match on Thursday in Doha, Qatar.

Shakeel Abbasi scored three goals while Waqas Sharif scored two and Abdul Haseem, Mohammad Rizwan (sr) and Mohammad Imran scored one apiece as the Greenshirts overcame Oman with ease.

The tournament comprises six top teams from Asia – Pakistan, China, India, Oman, Malaysia and Japan.

Pakistan will face China next on Friday, December 21.

Meanwhile, defending champions India also got off to a fine start by beating China 4-0 with goals from V Raghunath, SV Sunil and Bimal Lakra.

Pakistan are firm favourites to win the Asian event after a successful Champions Trophy where they clinched a bronze medal by beating India in the play-off.

MELBOURNE: Pakistan put up a fighting performance but eventually lost 1-0 to Australia at the Champions Trophy in Melbourne on Tuesday.

Australia scored in the second-half after Kieran Govers slotted home a penalty corner. The result means that Australia finish behind Netherlands in Pool B on goal difference followed by Pakistan who will play Germany in the quarterfinals.

The first half remained scoreless as Pakistan kept Australia at bay with some great defending and by keeping the ball. Both teams missed several chances throughout the match but Australia finally broke the deadlock twenty minutes before time.

In the day’s other matches, India finished top of Pool A despite going down 3-2 in their pool game to Olympic champions Germany.

India will now face win-less Belgium, who finished fourth in Pool B, in a quarter-final on Thursday.

Elsewhere, England blew their chance to finish on top of Pool A after being held to a 1-1 draw against New Zealand, while the Netherlands had a scare against Belgium, but hung on to win 5-4.

A win will put India into the semi-finals and a chance for their first Champions Trophy medal since their bronze at Amstelveen in 1982.

Striker S.K. Uthappa said his team still took confidence going forward despite the loss to the Germans.

“Team morale is very high because we knew that it wouldn’t be an easy game to play against the Olympic gold medallists, so we were prepared for a good fight and that’s what happened,” he said.

“It was most important that we finished on top and that is what we did.”

German captain Moritz Fuerste said his team would reassess now they were at the quarter-final stage.

“The first three games weren’t that important, but we are definitely happy to avoid Australia or Holland,” Fuerste said.

Germany have to await the outcome of the match between Australia and Pakistan later on Tuesday to see who their quarter-final opponents.

India made the best possible start with Gurwinder Chandi finding space in the circle to deliver a powerful shot for the opening goal.

Germany worked themselves back in the game minutes later, with Oliver Korn following up his first shot which hit the post to fire home the rebound and level the game.

The match continued at a frantic pace, with India producing several shots on goal which were all stopped by German goalkeeper Nicolas Jacobi.

India continued on with their form after half-time, with a deflection from Nithin Thimmaiah from a penalty corner retrieving the lead.

India continued to play attacking hockey in search for another goal, however the disciplined German defence held firm.

This eventually paid dividends with a lapse in concentration from India allowing Germany back in the game.

Tobias Matania levelled with 13 minutes remaining and scored again two minutes later to seal the win.

The Netherlands improved their claims of finishing on top of Pool B despite a close call against Belgium 5-4.

While they came away with the win, they were pushed by the Belgians, who fought back from a 3-0 half-time deficit.

Dutch captain Klaas Vermeulen said despite the close call they would take the positives heading into the quarter-finals.

“The tournament is starting now (with the quarter finals). We have to forget the second half and remember the first and stay focused,” he said.

Earlier, England let slip a chance to finish on top of Pool A when they were held to a 1-1 draw with New Zealand.

They scored the first goal of the game through Mark Gleghorne, however the Kiwis controlled the second half with veteran Phillip Burrows levelling the score.

New Zealand will next play whoever finishes on top of pool B in the quarter-finals, with captain Dean Cousins saying his team has more scope for improvement.

“We are pleased (today), but need to keep getting better as it is going to get tougher as we go on (throughout the tournament),” he said.

COLOMBO: Team Pakistan is ready to take on the South African pace attack in its Super Eight match of the ICC World Twenty20 here at the R Premadasa Stadium Friday.

The match will be of more significance for Pakistan as a win against the Proteas will put them in the perfect frame of mind ahead of the big-ticket encounter with arch-rival India on Sunday.

South Africa has been in its consistent self in the group stage, but the real tournament starts now, and more so for the Proteas.

Speaking at a pre-match press conference on Thursday, captain Mohammad Hafeez said although South Africa had one of the best pace attacks, his batsmen were confident to face them.

While Pakistan is pinning its hopes on spinners, South Africa will rely on its fast bowlers.

“It’s all about the strategy of the team,” Hafeez said. “We rely on our spinners because we have some really special bowlers in the side like (Saeed) Ajmal. He’s been producing the goods for the last two years.

“Afridi is the other one, we’re really happy to get his form back. He bowled well in the last game and is getting better.

Hafeez said the conditions in Colombo were a lot different than in Pallekele, where Pakistan won both their Group D matches, against New Zealand and Bangladesh.

He said adjustability would be a factor with the change in the conditions. “But we as a team have played enough cricket here in Colombo to know the conditions well.”

Meanwhile, the matches to be played here at the R Premadasa Stadium today might be affected by some bad weather.

The conditions in Colombo on Thursday remained overcast with the sun playing hide and seek throughout the day.

The wicket being prepared for Pakistan’s match seemed to be a good track for Twenty20 cricket.

WARSAW: Cristiano Ronaldo’s powerful header 11 minutes from time sent Portugal into the Euro 2012 semi-finals with a deserved 1-0 victory over the Czech Republic on Thursday.

The world’s most expensive played hit the woodwork twice on an initially frustrating evening but crowned Portugal’s dominant second-half performance with his third goal of the tournament, nodding a right-wing Joao Moutinho cross into the net.

It was an impressive display from the Portuguese who were appearing in their fifth European Championship quarter-final in a row and will play Spain or France in the last four.

The Czechs made a lively start inspired by the clever prompting of Petr Jiracek and Portugal took time to settle.

Their simple gameplan was based around getting the ball to captain Ronaldo at every opportunity and he openly vented his frustration when his team mates failed to pick him out.

Ronaldo failed to connect properly with an overhead kick to the delight of the Czech fans, smashed a 35-metre free kick well wide and just before halftime struck the post following a brilliant turn and firm shot.

Portugal’s Nani and Miguel Veloso were booked as tempers frayed and they suffered another blow when striker Helder Postiga was carried off injured just before halftime and replaced by Hugo Almeida.

Almeida missed a great chance to open the scoring 19 minutes into the second half when he wastefully headed Raul Meireles’s perfect cross over the bar.

Another long-range Ronaldo free kick grazed the outside of the post and the Real Madrid forward then lashed a half-volley over the bar.

Portugal were dominating and Nani forced Petr Cech into a sprawling save before Almeida was adjudged offside when he nodded Nani’s cross into the net.

The Czechs earned a brief respite following a brilliant surging run down the left by Vaclav Pilar but Portugal hit back when Joao Moutinho’s swerving drive was tipped over by Cech and Nani’s shot was saved after good work by Meireles.

The match appeared to be drifting towards extra time when Portugal picked another hole on the left side of the Czech defence and Ronaldo stole in to provide an emphatic finish by heading the ball into the ground with the bounce taking it high into the net beyond Cech.

GALLE: Sri Lanka won the toss and chose to bat first in the first test against Pakistan on Friday.

The hosts suffered a blow on the morning of the test when their left-arm fast bowler Chanaka Welegedera was ruled out with a sore shoulder.

Nuwan Pradeep returns to play his second test and will share the new ball with Nuwan Kulasekera, who also makes a comeback to the test team after two years.

Mohammad Ayub makes his test debut for Pakistan at the age of 32, replacing captain Misbah-ul-Haq who is serving a one-Test ban because of his team’s slow over-rate in the fifth one-day international last Monday.

The two teams play a series of three Tests.

Renowned all rounder Shahid Khan Afridi, exhibiting the best all round performance in the second and the final Twenty20 International against Sri Lanka, smashed an unbeaten whirlwind 52 off 33 balls, claimed two key wickets and took a smart catch to help Pakistan level the series.

This magnificent performance earned him the ‘Man-of-the-Match’ award – the seventh in his career–, which is a world record in T20I cricket.

The 32-year-old also became the first player to appear in fifty T20 Internationals as no other player has achieved this feat. Brendan McCullum of New Zealand has played 47 such matches.

Besides, Afridi holds Pakistan record of scoring the most runs (801) and a world record for taking the highest number of wickets (58) in this format.

The former Pakistan captain has already set various world and national records in One-day International cricket.

However, it is strange to note that on the day Afridi played this memorable match, former chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) Ijaz Butt said in a statement that Shaid Afridi was not a suitable player for a T20 match.

Moreover, the team management has disallowed media from talking to Afridi just a day after he played his 50th T20 International. According to a report, Pakistan team manager Naveed Akram Cheema told media persons covering the ongoing series in Sri Lanka that they could talk to any national cricketer other than Afridi.

The report suggested the reason why Afridi was gagged by the team management was the player’s habit of making careless statements.

COLOMBO: The third one-day international between Sri Lanka and Pakistan was abandoned due to rain in Colombo on Wednesday.

Pakistan were 12-2 off 6.2 overs after electing to bat when play was called off, with Asad Shafiq unbeaten on five and skipper Misbah-ul-Haq yet to open his account.

Pacemen Lasith Malinga and Nuwan Kulasekara each bagged one wicket for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka made one change from the team which played the last game as they rested left-arm spinner Rangana Herath and brought in debutant Sajeewa Weerakoon.

Pakistan replaced paceman Rahat Ali with Shafiq.

The five-match series is currently tied 1-1, with Pakistan winning the opening one-dayer by six wickets and Sri Lanka winning the second game by 76 runs in Pallekele.

The fourth one-dayer will be played in Colombo on Saturday.

۳۔ کیا یہ بہتر نہ ہوتا کہ جب ٹی ٹونٹی کا الگ اسکواڈ بن رہا ہے تو کسی نئے اور نوجوان کھلاڑی کو کپتان بنا کر اس مسئلے کو طویل عرصے کے لئے حل کرلیا جاتا۔

The 32-year-old, a powerful beginning batsman, is returning in the group after a 14-month argument with the Western Indies Cricket Panel (WICB) for a three-match sequence beginning on May 16.Gayle, who has obtained a Western Indies history 19 thousands in 228 ODIs, has not performed worldwide cricket since a beat by Pakistan in the quarter-finals of the Community Cup in April last season.
A 30 days later, Gayle criticized the WICB and present instructor Otis Gibson after being remaining out of a group for a one-day sequence against Pakistan. However, several events between the WICB and Gayle, brokered by mature Caribbean political figures, have finished the stand-off. Clyde Grows, chairman of selectors, said in a statement: “Chris is a gamer of confirmed excellent and we are awaiting him including this aspect to the part and his efforts as a mature participant of the group.”
