It was my first day at Addenbrooke’s Hospital, Cambridge as a trainee doctor, the Induction day. Being a medical graduate from Pakistan, it was a very important day for me to get acquainted with the system. As expected I went through Basic Life Support training, precautions before transfusing a patient, infection control, hand washing techniques and basics of prescribing. All was well until we came to the last training module of fire training. Fire training, for a doctor? Why oh why? Let us go home now, my stomach was rumbling with hunger and my head was aching. But I had to sit for this mandatory module as I wouldn’t be allowed to work unless all boxes were checked and this would be repeated every year.

My Asian colleagues and I were in agreement “these ‘goras’ are too sensitive to trivial things”. We laughed. “No one cares about those petty infections and issues in Pakistan, India and Bangladesh which they fuss about” we chuckled. “We are strong, immune and hardy to most of the infections and why this fire training? We are not training to be firemen.” … Only a few years of living here proved it was nothing to be proud of.

The module began. The fireman training us, taught about 6 types of fire, their chemistry and physics including how fire spreads (i.e. Conduction, Convection and Radiation), different kinds of fire fighting equipment, fire exits (not to lock them or obstruct them or park in front of them), assembly points, weekly fire test alarms, electromagnetic fire doors which would close automatically in case of fire alarm going off (to contain the fire) etc. Too much, too boring, we all agreed and yawned as “passionate doctors”.

The Karachi fire tragedy has taken the peace away. More than 300 precious human lives lost including women and children, 300 families mourning their loved ones, charred bodies, the worst fire tragedy in history of Pakistan, what a horrible day it was! Lack of implementation of basic laws, low cost of human lives, selfish money-making employers, lack of governance and professionalism on their part and lack of training and awareness of basic rights on employee’s part; my mind is all entangled, trying to find the root cause.

It’s true that the government is non-functional, the laws and legislature are left to dust in libraries and offices, and the nation is running most of the things on its own without any support from the leaders. But it’s a fact as well, that, we as a nation are too casual and complacent in our daily routines. You wear a seat belt – you are too sensitive a kid, or you are a showing-off-elite child. Wearing a helmet while biking makes you less of a ‘hero’. Overtaking a car by revving your engine is a ‘wow’ factor and sticking to the rules and observing laws make you a timid teddy or less manly. And when someone asks you to be cautious and stick to the rules, they are just a nervous ‘newbie London-palat’. The casual attitude of complacence must change.

The Karachi factory had all exit doors locked except one, and people kept pleading for the keys. The only working ‘fire exits’ were some windows through which some workers managed to fling themselves to save their lives. Yes! I am talking about humans locked in an ‘inferno’ and killed because no one saw it coming. This horrible incident could repeat itself if we don’t stand up.

But what can we do?

Every one of us can pressurize our employers, self-train and then train others, run a movement not only in factories, but all places even homes. Imagine the horrific consequences in schools, colleges, offices and hospitals.

There’s a lot to learn from the developed world but unfortunately our society only takes copying their accent and outfit as ‘development’ and for our leaders, knowing the West only means luxurious holidays and wagging tails on their commands. All the leaders who have ruled us so far know how things work in developed countries but what they don’t know is that their prime responsibility is learn from them, change and implement laws and protect the citizens. That’s what these leaders are answerable for, in the court of God.

Casualties from plane crashes, overloaded vans falling from heights, fire tragedies are all preventable with just little precaution. I wouldn’t stop blaming government for anything tragic we encounter, but that’s not it! Think what we can do as responsible people. Our responsibility increases due to them being dysfunctional. Impress upon annual vehicle checks, start from your car, team up with other parents and refuse to send your children in a van that has no check, team up with colleagues and pressurise your employer for fire training. Arrange fire trainings in hospitals, schools and colleges. Play your role wherever you are. This is the least we can do when we know we are forgotten and abandoned by the lot we call government. Let the change begin.

Staring back at me from the mirror is a dark and skinny oval face, everything that is considered taboo in Pakistan’s bridal market. I curse my genes and hold my ancestors culpable for the atavistic ability of excessive melanin production in my skin cells. And then there is the scorching sun of Lahore that comes down with a vengeance to tan my skin as if I am the only Pakistani woman who needs natural Vitamin D to avoid rickets.

No matter what the amount of sun block and however high the SPF (Sun Block Factor) I slobber on my skin, ultra violet alpha and beta rays penetrate my skin to give it a brown shade so admired in the West but oh so booed in Pakistan. Little does the sun know the gold Brazilian skin is only good as long as it sprawls on the sparkling beaches of Los Angeles and Sao Paulo.

In Pakistan there is a growing clamor from the liberal segment of society about equality and fairness but ironically that equality is increasingly calibrated in terms of freedom for women being able to attire themselves in western apparel while fairness is dependent on the skin tone of the ‘fairer sex’, lighter the better. No one can deny the prevalent practice of mothers-in-law looking for a fair (nothing less than ‘snow white-part 2’ for my son-puhleez !) bride even for her crow-black, noir son for gripping fear of a progeny that fails to resemble our erstwhile gora sahibs.

Many a times rather every morning, late afternoon and night, flicking through internationally broadcast news, food, entertainment and sundry channels one finds, without failing, show hosts and guest-doctors (quacks to be more appropriate) discussing and exchanging desi totkay (recipes), creams and tricks to getting a fairer and ever whiter skin yet the salvo of ‘main kaisay rang gora karon? (How do I get a fairer skin?) query never ends. Under such demanding conditions, one must applaud the doctors’ perseverance and resolve in taking the responsibility of turning every girl into a geisha and epitome of pulchritude (of course all this depends on her color) with missionary zeal and utmost seriousness.

However, there is this profound phenomenon of the dito fairness quandary being asked by an exponentially growing number of female callers who still insist on asking it in their own words for some inexplicable personal satisfaction, as if that will somehow change the query. Miracle to magic is: the ‘talented doctor’ always has a varied answer ready. It’s as if he’s beauty’s Zubaida apa personified. Hence, the phones keep ringing and so does the clever doctor’s cash register.

For the unlucky ones, fear not, dear soon-to-be-brides and job-hunting girls who could not get their calls through to the learned charlatan-of-a-doctor on any of the gazillion morning shows; what with the lines being clogged as every Pakistani female jumps at the sight of the beautician cum erudite dermatologist with magic potions and trouble shooting manuals.

The fairness battle is not all lost yet. There are easy to use, off-the-shelf fairness creams custom manufactured for your specific skin type that promise to make you so white that every rishta wala visiting your residence the next time or the job interview where you previously failed to impress the recruiting staff with your skills and aptitude, will be so smitten and caught off guard that they will quickly give their nod of approval without so much as raising a finger.

You can have all your sweet revenge and wallow in your success to the dismay of your friends who thought you vacuous and bird-brained. You can thumb your nose at all the aunties and their daughters who previously rejected you for your color and not your homemaking skills which you will now have ample time to display by using every out-of-season and expensive vegetable and fruit on your face to retain your artificial fairness, oblivious to the fact the hole it will be burning in your husband’s pockets. Hell yeah! that’s only a fair price tag fair for a skin color that is so cherished and coveted in whole of Pakistan.

On a more serious note, one would imagine Pakistani society to be far less indulgent in racial and color discrimination due to the uniformity of being categorized as brown but it is shocking to discover just the opposite. Degenerating societal values that focus more on extraneous and superficial bearing have rendered people insensitive enough to openly use derogatory terms like ‘nigger’ to ridicule, separate, and remove oneself from an inferior with skin color being the sole determinant.

What stuns my comprehending abilities is the fact, how one can defy genetic and biological make up without addressing the protein-based nucleic acids whose combination determine among other characteristics our skin color. But then I recall our ability to invent cars run on water – an innovative milestone that defies the very principles of thermodynamics and by this very virtue has the potential to eclipse man’s first step on the moon and I become numb to the rationality of mutating into white ghosts by simple application of creams and fruits sprinkled with a healthy dose of whitening facials.

Yet the myth of being whiter than atta (flour) eludes us and we keep dialing away…

Movie Review: The Dark Knight Rises5

In “The Dark Knight Rises”, a man, broken and defeated, rises against revolution as a city crumbles. But that’s just one-part of the story.

On July 20th, a few hours after the mid-night release “The Dark Knight Rises”, the epic and subtle conclusion to Christopher Nolan’s Batman legacy, a friend of mine texted me what I thought could only be a cruel joke: a one-line news of the Aurora shooting.

Someone near me, also an avid reader of Batman retorted without thinking: “Sure, that’s got to be the Joker’s work”. While “The Dark Knight Rises” doesn’t proclaim a villain born of unfathomable, motiveless, quench for anarchy as immortalized by Heath Ledger or his spiritual predecessor Jack Nicholson, or the real-life actions of the individual behind the still-in-investigation act, what its villain sets out to accomplish is nearly radical enough: the domination of a free spirit.

The disaster, although racking up from the movie’s inception is imminent, and its threat — or that of the destruction of Gotham — rings a little closer to home, without making it apparent. A fellow critic of mine, who saw the movie before me, said that you can only talk about the first 30 minutes of the movie. Anymore and you are liable to trip-up on spoilers. She is right.

In “Rises”, Christopher Nolan’s deliberately and delicately crafted swan-song to Bob Kane’s comic centering on a billionaire orphan turned detective-vigilante, pain (physical and figurative) is intensified, a city-falls and a hero — or make that heroes — rise.

Banking on his and brother screenwriter Jonathan Nolan’s aptitude for complex character juggling, Chris Nolan expands and contracts a handful of deep-rooted individuals for 165 minutes of the film’s running time – right into the overarching climax on Gotham’s streets that include everything from an army of weaponless cops to tank-cars and a ticking nuclear weapon.

Although Googler’s would have no doubt picked up the clues, “Rises” is an adaptation of a number of Batman comic-arcs since DC comics rebooted, and permanently relocated, the dark knight to a grittier domain in 1987’s “Batman: Year One” (which subsequently plays a substantial role in “Batman Begins”). The titles in question for inspiration would be: “No Man’s Land”, “Knight Fall” fiddles around with Nolan’s auteurist touch.

“The Dark Knight” had ended 8 years ago when “Rises” opens. Bruce Wayne (played with phlegmatic restrain by Christian Bale) is a recluse with a bad-leg, moping for Rachel Dawes (his deceased love interest played by Maggie Gyllenhaal). The Dent Act — a law fortified by the death Gotham’s white knight, Harvey Dent and Commissioner James Gordon (Gary Oldman) — has eradicated crime to the street-level. Gotham is safe. Here, Bane’s single minded agenda, which we later learn is a by-product of unmovable belief (and which comes full-circle to “Batman Begins”), is a perceptible layer in Hardy’s low-key, but frightfully aware performance.

And is it brutal. In the highly publicized poster art, which divulges a key aspect about Bruce Wayne/Batman’s butchery, we see Bane’s hulking figure walking away from a cracked-cowl. The “real” fight scene, which happens at halfway through the film, is as atrociously pitiless as it is mesmeric. It is a single instant, in a string of grandly-designed incidents that numb the audience into absolute submission.

In a separate, interconnected layer to Bane and Bruce is a neophyte “hot-head” cop, Jonathan Blake (a winning Joseph Gordon-Levitt), an orphan who walks up to Bruce’s home one day and tells him that he’s known about his cape and cowl. As the screenplay works out, the masks are an extension, and not a divergence, of Bruce or Bane or the velvety cat-burglar Selina Kyle’s (Anne Hathaway) inherent personalities.

“Rises” doesn’t need to label Selina Kyle under the moniker of “Catwoman” (and after the disastrous stand-alone starring Halle Berry, who would want to); Her role, as the roles of every single individual — whether Michael Caine’s trust-worthy father-figure-cum-butler, Morgan Freeman’s company chief and tech wizard, or Marion Cotillard’s philanthropist (and half-baked love-interest) – are precociously pre-composed. After all, this is the end of the era.

Saying anything else, would be saying too much.

Porn star creates a stir in Bollywood debut6

MUMBAI – An Indo-Canadian porn star makes her Bollywood debut on Friday in what is expected to be one of India’s raunchiest mainstream movies, which is already raising eyebrows in the sexually conservative country.

Sunny Leone, born in Canada to Indian parents, plays a porn actress in the Hindi film “Jism 2″ (Body 2) that opens in cinemas on Friday to much buzz, as well as controversy over its provocative posters and content.

The mayor of Mumbai, Sunil Prabhu, has ordered the removal of promotional posters from public buses in India’s entertainment capital after a local legislator complained the image used was obscene, the Press Trust of India reported.

The advertisement shows a naked woman reclining suggestively under a sheer, wet sheet, although the model is not 31-year-old Leone, who has no previous experience of mainstream cinema or theatre.

Earlier in the week, protesters in northwest Amritsar burned an effigy of Leone in anger at the film’s alleged vulgarity, while a resident of the holy city of Varanasi has reportedly asked a court to put a stay order on the film.

Leone told entertainment channel Star World that she had had to adapt to the demands of mainstream cinema and its more sophisticated choreography, particularly for love scenes.

“It was so complicated. In my world, it’s turn the camera on and go,” she told interviewer Anupama Chopra according to a transcript released to the media.

The award-winning porn star in the United States made her name in India in the reality television series Bigg Boss last year and declared her interest afterwards in taking on film roles.

Speaking to online portal Bollywood Hungama, she said her first Hindi production was “not frivolous cinema by any means”.

“Yes, the promos may have given an indication of a sex-laden film but inherently it is a dramatic thriller. Wait for some surprises,” she said.

The first movie in the series, released in 2003, starred popular actress Bipasha Basu in the lead and was a thriller woven around an extra-marital affair, again a taboo for mainstream Hindi movies.

A video of the sequel’s title song on YouTube has already notched up nearly three million views over the past month.

At a promotional event for the movie in Delhi last Friday, Leone showed her ability to grab headlines by posing in white lingerie while lying on a bed.

Critics of the decision to take promotional posters off Mumbai’s public buses was condemned by some as the latest example of “moral policing” in Mumbai, where numerous recent raids on popular nightspots have angered the city’s youth – a more liberal, Westernised generation than their parents.

Mocking the decision to take down the posters on Twitter, the film’s director Pooja Bhatt thanked the complainants “for giving Jism 2 cult status!”

Leone says she plans to keep making adult movies in Los Angeles, where she owns her own production company, but will refrain from appearing in porn roles herself over the next couple of years.

She is also appearing in India in a televised advertisement for black, grape-flavoured condoms and an animal charity campaign for sterilisation of pet cats and dogs.

پشاور: پشتو کی معروف گلوکارہ غزالہ جاوید اور ان کے والد کو نامعلوم افراد نے فائرنگ کرکے قتل کر دیا ۔

پولیس کے مطابق واقعہ پیر کی رات ڈبگری کے علاقے میں پیش آیا۔

مرحومہ کی بہن فرحت بی بی کے مطابق غزالہ کا سابق شوہر جہانگیر اپنے دو ساتھیوں سمیت ان کے مکان میں داخل ہوا اور پستول سے اندھادھند فائرنگ کردی جس کے نتیجے میں انکی بہن اور والد ہلاک ہوگئے۔

سوات کے علاقہ بنڑ سے تعلق رکھنے والی غزالہ خیبر پختونخواہ سمیت دنیا بھر میں مشہور تھیں اور ان کے گانوں کی کئی آڈیو اور ویڈیو البم ریلیز ہوچکی ہیں۔

انہوں نے گائیکی کا آغاز دو ہزار آٹھ میں کیا، ابتداء میں رحیم شاہ کے ساتھ بھی گانے گائے، ان کا پشتو گانا “نرے نرے باران دے” انہیں مقبولیت کی نئی بلندیوں پر لے گیا۔

شادی کے بعد غزالہ جاوید نے گانے چھوڑ دیئے تھے لیکن خلع لینے کے بعد انہوں نے دوبارہ گلوکاری شروع کی، وہ اپنے زیادہ ترپروگرام افغانستان میں منعقد کرتی تھیں۔

دو ہزار چھ اور سات میں جب سوات میں شدت پسندی کے باعث حالات بگڑنے لگے تو غزالہ خاندان سمیت وہاں سے ہجرت کرکے پشاور منتقل ہوئیں۔

غزالہ ان دنوں اپنا زیادہ تر وقت افغانستان میں گزار رہیں تھی جہاں وہ مختلف پروگراموں اور تقریبات میں شرکت کرتی تھیں۔ وہ حال ہی میں پشاور واپس آئی تھیں۔

خیبر پختونخوا کی ثقافتی تنظیموں، شاعروں اور گلوکاروں نے غزالہ جاوید اور ان کے والد کے قتل کی شدید الفاظ میں مذمت کرتے ہوئے حکومت سے ملزمان کی فوری گرفتاری کا مطالبہ کیا ہے۔

ان کا کہنا ہے کہ نوجوان گلوکارہ کی ہلاکت پشتو موسیقی کےلیے ایک ناقابل تلافی نقصان ہے۔

نیویارک: جینیفر لوپیز فاربس کی سالانہ سو مشہور افراد کی فہرست میں اپنی ساتھی پاپ سنگر لیڈی گاگا اور میڈیا کی مغل کہلانے والی اوپرا ونفرے کو پیچھے چھوڑ کر اس سال سرِ فہرست رہیں۔

فنی شعبے سے شہرت پانے والی بیالیس سالہ بیک وقت سنگر اور اداکارہ گزشتہ سال سے پچاس نمبر اوپر نظر آئیں۔ یہ فہرست فنی شعبے سے آمدنی، میڈیا پر چھائے  رہنے کی طاقت اور سوشل میڈیا میں مقبولیت کی بنا پر ترغیب دی جاتی ہے۔

فوربس نے لوپیز کی پچھلے بارہ ماہ کی 52ملین ڈالر آمدنی بتائی ہے جس کی وجہ آج کل ‘امریکن ائیڈل’ شو میں بطور جج آنا ہے۔

فوربس کی فہرست کے مطابق نمبر دو پر آنے والی ونفرے کی آمدنی تقریباً 165 ملین ڈالر ہے۔

کینیڈا کے اٹھارہ سالہ پاپ سٹار جسٹن بیبر جنہوں نے پچھلے سال فنی دنیا میں قدم رکھا، فوربس کے مطابق ان کی آمدنی 55 ملین ڈالر ہے اور لحاضہ وہ نمبر تین پر رہے۔

اس کے علاوہ پاپ سٹار ریہانہ پہلے دفعہ فہرست میں اپنی جگہ بنانے میں کامیاب ہوئیں جن کی آمدنی 53 ملین ڈالر بتائی گئی۔

لیڈی گاگا جن کی آمدنی 52 ملین ڈالر بتائی گئی چار نمبر نیچے آنے بعد پانچوے نمبر پر اپنی جگہ بنا سکیں۔ اور برٹنی سپئر ایک سال کے وقفے کے بعد 58 ملین ڈالر آمدنی کے ساتھ نمبر چھ پر آئیں۔

کم کارڈاشیاں، افنی دنیا کا ایک قابلِ ذکر نیا ستارہ نمبر سات پر رہیں۔ ان کی آمدنی جو کہ 18 ملین ڈالر بتائی گئی البتہ تمام فہرست میں شامل افراد میں کم تھی لیکن ان کے ذانی مسائل کے بنأپر وہ میڈیا پر چھائی رہیں۔

پاپ سنگر کیٹی پیری نمبر آٹھ پر رہیں جب کہ ٹام کروس نمبر نو پر آئے۔

لاس اینجیلس: ہالی وڈ کی نامور فنکار جوڑی ٹام کروز اور کیٹی ہومز نے پانچ سال تک رشتہ ازدواج میں بندھے رہنے کے بعد علیحدگی کا فیصلہ کر لیا ہے۔

سماجی رابطے کی ویب سائٹ ٹوئٹر پر کروز نے اپنے اس فیصلے کا اعلان کیا۔ کروز کے مطابق دونوں اداکار باہمی رضامندی سے طلاق لے رہے ہیں۔

ایک امریکی جریدے نے جمعے کے روز اپنی رپورٹ میں بتایا کہ تینتیس سالہ ہومز نے اس حوالے سے ایک اٹارنی کی خدمات بھی حاصل کر لی ہیں۔

ان کے اٹارنی نے تصدیق کی کہ وہ علیحدگی کے معاملے میں ہومز کی نمائندگی کر رہے ہیں۔

انہوں نے کہا کہ یہ ہومز اور ان کے خاندان کا ذاتی اور نجی معاملہ ہے۔ ہومز کی اولین ترجیع ان کی بیٹی ہیں۔

تین جولائی کواپنی پچاسویں سالگرہ منانے والے کروز نے نومبر دو ہزار چھ میں ہومز سے شادی کی تھی۔

ان کی ایک چھ سالہ بیٹی ہے جس کا نام سوُری ہے۔

یہ ہومز کی پہلی جبکہ کروز کی تیسری شادی تھی۔ مشن امپوسیبل کے اسٹار اداکار نے اس سے قبل میمی راجرز اور نکول کڈمین سے شادی کی تھی۔
