About Abbottabad
Abbottabad is a city located in the Pakistani province of NWFP and is the third-largest city in the province after Peshawar and Mardan. The city is situated in the Orash Valley, 150 km north of Islamabad and 200 km east of Peshawar at an altitude of 4,120 feet (1,260 m). The city is well-known throughout Pakistan for its pleasant weather, high standard educational institutions and military establishments. It remains a major hub for tourism of the Northern Areas in the summer. The headquarters of Hazara Division, situated at an altitude of 1,225 m (4002 ft) above sea level and surrounded by refreshing green hills of Sarban, is one of the best-known hill resorts of Pakistan. It is situated on the Karakoram Highway (Silk Route) to China, 120 Km from Rawalpindi/Islamabad and 205 Km from Peshawar. The climate is temperate with 4 distinct seasons-spring, summer, autumn and winter. The summer is pleasant while the winter is moderately cold with occasional snowfall. The city is non-industrial, situated in the green Orish valley and is free from environmental pollution. It has a population of over 300,000.Like Hazara, Abbottabad has seen many invasions from outside by the conquering forces of diverse races, tribes and kingdoms. The modern city of Abbottabad was founded by Major Abbott, the British deputy commissioner of Hazara (1849 to 1853) during British rule in the subcontinent. Major Abbott is credited with making major changes in the administrative setup in the region, so that after his departure, the city was named after him. The British maintained a sizeable military presence here, evidenced even today by the Pakistan Military Academy (PMA), which has remained as the major training academy for military officers. The PMA provided fame to Abbottabad for many years, prior to the recent development of the city, from a non-industrial backward area, to a busy modern business, economic and academic centre. The creation of Ayub Medical Complex has once more brought the city into the national limelight and spurred a lasting chapter of growth and development.
Abbottabad is a small neat and clean town in spacious valleys surrounded by green hills. It is a popular summer resort, located at the end of Murree-Abbottabad hill tract, noted for its verdant parks, gardens, golf course and pine covered hills. Abbottabad, apart from being famous for its educational institutions and Military Academy, also serves as the gateway to almost all-beautiful places in Pakistan. The formidable Karakorams & , the enchanting Himalayas can be approached from Abbottabad. Though the importance of the city has been diminished a little by the completion of Karakoram Highwaybecause, in the past, the only track available to reach Karakoram was through Babusar Pass, which in its turn, could only be approached through Abbottabad. The city suffered widespread damage from the 2005 N Pakistan earthquake.

The district has only one Tehsil, Abbottabad. It has two Municipalities, Abbottabad and Havelian, and one Town, Nawanshehr. There are fifty-seven Union Councils in the district. History of Abbottabad
Nearby are rock inscriptions of Indian emperor Asoka (3d cent. B.C). Coins of the Greco-Bectrians kings discovered from the Hazara tract suggest that the area was inhabited in first century B.C. Abbottabad has seen many invasions from outside by the conquering forces of diverse races, tribes and kingdoms. in the Past the Hindus were living here. They were more in cities compared to villages. In the Period of the British, Sikhs also came here. Both the Hindus and Sikhs had a strong hold on the trade and influence in the politics. Some of them were in the government. The current Abbottabad District was originally a Tehsil of Hazara, the Imperial Gazetteer of India described it as follows: Tahsīl of Hazāra District, North-West Frontier Province, lying between 33º49′ and 34º 22′ N. and 72º55′ and 73º 31′ E., with an area of 715 square miles. It is bounded on the east by the Jhelum, which divides it from Pūnch and the Punjab District of Rawalpindi; and it comprises part of the mountain valleys drained by the Dor and Harroh rivers, together with the hill country eastward. The hill-sides to the north and north-east are covered with timber forest. The population in 1901 was 194,632, compared with 175,735 in 1891. It contains the towns of Abbottabad (population, 7,764), the Tehsil and District head-quarters, and NAWASHAHR (4,114); and 359 villages. The land revenue and cesses amounted in 1903-4 to Rs. 97,000. The district is named after Major James Abbott the first deputy commissioner of Hazara (1849 – 1853). During British rule Abbottabad became the capital of Hazara District, which was named after and contained the Hazara valley, a small valley in the outermost Himalayas, between the Indus in the west and Kashmir in the east. In June 1948, the British Red Cross opened a hospital in Abbottabad to deal with 80-100 patients daily who were being “brought in from the Kashmir fighting areas”. In 1901 the population of the town and cantonment was 7764. In 1991 the population was 66,000. In 1998, the population of Abbottabad District was 881,000. Many people identify themselves with hereditary nations. Among these are Swatis, Abbasis, Awan, Utmanzai, Jadoons, Karlal, Syed, Tanoli etc.
1. 1822

2. 1853
- 1853 – Abbottabad came into being in 1853 AD, as a summer resort and training camp for the Northern command of Army.
3. 1888
- Sep 8, 1888 – On the 8th September, 1888, Mr. WT van Someren, Superintendent of post offices, Rawal- pindi Division, was deputed to make the postal arrangements with the force. Haripur was constituted a Base office for the Derband column, and Abbottabad for the Oghi column. The tonga service from Hassan Abdal to Abbottabad was strengthened and extended to Mansera, and a mixed tonga and horse service was established between Abbottabad and Oghi. 4. 1904
- 1904 – The romantic weather of Abbottabad attracts thousands of visitors each year. The city was once called “The City of the Maple Tree”, for its large Maple trees that lines the road sides, but were sacrificed for the sake of widening the roads. Allama Iqbal wrote his famous poem “abr” (cloud), when he got inspired by the beauty and grandeur of Abbottabad on his visit in 1904.

- Jul 24, 1937 – Manoj Kumar was born on the 24th of July, 1937 at Abbottabad which is now in Pakistan. He is a renowned Indian actor and director of the Indian film industry. Manoj Kumar is known for directing and acting in films based on patriotic themes. It is for this reason that he is popularly known as Mr. Bharat. Manoj Kumar was born as Harikishen Goswami in Abbottabad, a town of the North-West Frontier.
6. 1957
- Dec 1957 – The Bloch Centre moved to Abbottabad in the last week of December 1957 and there it has remained ever since. The Regimental Centre was last to arrive in Abbottabad. Today, it has added into the glories of Abbottabad. The Centre has magnificent buildings, which depict its history and culture. 8. 2007
- Mar 31, 2007 – According to sources the worried citizens of Abbottabad approached the federal culture ministry and the Director General Federal of Archaeology Department sent an inspector to Abbottabad. After his visit a letter was issued on March 31, 2007, saying the ministry wanted to protect the threatened buildings of Abbottabad. Upon receiving that letter, district government and DCO of Abbottabad verbally cancelled auction of those buildings.
